Parent Information

At Oatlands Infant School we understand that the answer to positive behaviour lies in the ability of adults to deliver behaviour practice that is simple, highly effective and consistent.  This consistency is a base on which to build authentic, exciting behaviour practice.

“When people talk about behaviour, they obsessively search for the instant solution.  Some peddle magic dust or ‘behaviour systems’ that glisten yet quickly fade.  Others relentlessly scream for a bigger stick to beat students down with.  Both extremes harbour an irresistible idea that there is a short cut to changing behaviour.  They sell the lie that you can provoke sustained behavioural change in others without doing much hard work yourself.  The truth is that there is no alternative to hard work: building relationships with those who would rather not, resetting expectations with those who trample them, being relentlessly positive and sustaining a poker face when confronted with challenging behaviour.”   - Paul Dix, Pivotal Education

To encourage and reinforce good behaviour, we will endeavour to provide a calm, friendly atmosphere throughout the school.

Our school rules are:

  • Ready
  • Respectful
  • Safe

Consistency

Our consistencies, which we will reinforce every day, are:

  • Daily 'meet and greet' - staff will greet the children at the door to give a personal welcome in to class.
  • Lovely Lines - children will line up facing forwards, with hands by their sides and standing quietly.
  • Wonderful Walking - pupils are to walk sensibly and calmly around school and encouraged by staff to do so.

Positive Recognition

  1. Recognition Boards
  2. Home Phone Calls
  3. Certificates
  4. Praise from different members of staff

Anti-bullying

We take any allegations of bullying or racial harassment extremely seriously. Incidents will be dealt with according to our anti-bullying and behaviour management policies.

We encourage children to walk, cycle or scooter to school and a parking area is available for bikes and scooters.

We are unable to provide car parking for parents bringing children to school.  Roadside parking is very limited and we urge that every care and consideration is shown when parking. Any visitors with special access arrangements are advised to contact the school in advance of their visit so that appropriate action can be put in place such as ensuring the gate can be opened for them.  Please give due consideration to our neighbours and ensure that parked cars do not cause an obstruction to the entrance to the back-lanes, drive-ways or garages.

You must not park on the double yellow or zig-zag lines.

If you have a concern or complaint about your child, or anything to do with the school, you should follow the procedure set out in our complaints policy.  This also explains the procedure the school will follow to try and resolve your issue.

Complaints Policy

Parents are invited to contribute towards school funds by way of the School Gift Aid Scheme. This money is used for various school activities, as determined by the school governing body, and to purchase incidental items used by the children or to enhance the school environment. Full details of the Gift Aid Scheme are available from the school.

General safety

The safety of the children is of paramount importance. It is absolutely essential, if your child is being collected by anyone other than the usual person, that you notify the school by letter or telephone call. Please help us by giving full information.

Emergency contact details

It is essential that we have correct information in case a child falls ill during the day. If you need to update information about your address, telephone number or emergency contact number, please contact school.

Should your child have an accident in school that we feel requires extra attention, we will do our best to contact you so that you can decide whether or not to take your child to the doctor’s or hospital. If we are unable to contact you, we will take your child to the local accident unit, but will continue to try to make contact with you.

If your doctor has prescribed medicine for your child but they are well enough to return to school, the staff will administer medicines during the school day. An “Administration of Medicines” form, obtainable from the school office, must be completed.  It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure that the medicine is brought into the school office in a suitable container and that the medicine is collected at the end of the day.

Parents of children who suffer from asthma are asked to contact the school as soon as possible so that we have full information regarding the appropriate treatment.

Please keep your child at home if you think he/she is infectious. Children must be kept away from school for 48 hours following any episode of diarrhoea or sickness.

You will see all the available appointment times and be able to make a second appointment with their siblings’ class teacher.  If you should have any problems just let the office know and we will be happy assist you.

What is a parent forum?

A parent & carer forum is where a representative group of parents and carers from across the school meet with a governor as chair, the Headteacher and, as required, relevant staff present, to seek views on a range of strategic issues relating to school life. Parent/carer members represent the views of parents at forum meetings and report back on the work of the forum as appropriate to parents/carers. It offers a wonderful opportunity to contribute to policy making and to play a part in improving childrens’ learning and experience at school.

What does the forum not do?

It is important to note that the forum is not a decision-making body; it is there to gather, discuss and exchange views. It will not discuss anything relating to individual pupils, parents, carers or school staff; any such issues should be raised by the parent concerned with the relevant teacher, or Headteacher as appropriate. It is also not appropriate for specific complaints to be raised in the forum – it is important that any parent who has a complaint follows the school’s complaints procedure.
