Teaching Assistant: Mrs Kennedy
Each week, your child will come home with a book that matches their phonic knowledge, along with a library book. These books will be changed on a Monday. Please listen to, or read to, your child daily and record any reading you do at home in your child's Reading Record. We ask that the children read their reading books three times to boost their fluency.
Phonics is taught daily as a whole class and activities are provided to support new learning as well as deepen children's understanding. From January we will be sending list of Common Exception Words home for you to practise spelling at home. We will then complete a quiz in school each term to check the children’s knowledge of reading and spellings these words.
Mrs Hunt will be taking the PE sessions this half term, on a Thursday morning. Please make sure your child comes to school in their PE kit (named).
Show and Tell
Our weekly 'Show and Tell' session is a great way to boost confidence and improve clarity and coherence when speaking in front of a group. There is no pressure at all to speak, but as they are ready, we find that the children really enjoy the opportunity to tell the class about what they have brought in.
Children are welcome to bring in something interesting for 'Show and Tell' on the following Fridays. Alternatively, you could use the Year One email address to send in a photo for your child to talk about when it is their turn. Please avoid sending in anything very precious, fragile or expensive!

Handwriting
Handwriting and correct letter formation are an important part of children's literacy skills, however, there are various ways in which certain letters can be formed. To help with consistency and in order for you to be able to support your children at home with their handwriting, below is a PowerPoint modelling how we form letters at Oatlands Infants.
We watched a video, 'The Door is Always Open' (The Moomins turn 80 in 2025 ✨ #moomin), about how the Moomin House was built and what it stands for. The Hedgehogs showed terrific teamwork and cooperation as they worked in small groups to build their own Moomin Houses. They thought really deeply about the little details that would make someone feel welcome and at home. Some of these incredible details included: beds with cosy bedding, a TV, mirrors and pictures on the walls, pretty curtains at the windows, a fire with a bucket of firewood, games, a home gym, a lift to make the top floor accessible, a sign saying 'Help Centre', a pie and a bowl of chips! When the houses were finished, the Hedgehogs discussed the values that their house stood for before writing these on post-it notes.
It’s British Science Week!
Year Ones were treated to a fantastic talk from Dr Wakefield who is a lung Dr. The children loved hearing about his job, learning about lungs and taking part in experiments!
